Reenvisioning Heritage: A Living Force for the Future

Heritage sites embody profound cultural value, yet their relevance depends on how communities engage with and experience them. How can heritage conservation and revitalisation align with innovation to build sustainable, future-ready cultural ecosystems? How can strategic partnerships, innovative funding models, and community-driven initiatives activate heritage as platforms for learning, cultural exchange, and community connection?

This Impact Studio convenes leading experts in architectural heritage conservation to draw insights from two UNESCO-honoured projects. Tai Kwun—conserved and revitalised by The Hong Kong Jockey Club in partnership with the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region—has been transformed from a former Central Police Station Compound into a vibrant cultural landmark that reflects Hong Kong’s role as a centre for East–West exchange. Meanwhile, the Esplanade Seawall and Promenade conservation project in George Town, Penang, Malaysia demonstrates how heritage-led waterfront regeneration can successfully combine conservation, innovative design, and climate resilience to enhance both place identity and community well-being.
